Mike’s Deli – The Original Arthur Avenue Italian Deli

Our family history in the Belmont community started with our maternal grandparents who migrated from Naples to America in 1919. Nonno (Grandfather) Gennaro was from the heart of Naples and Nonnabella, as we called our grandmother, was from Nola (home of the Giglio Festival or Festival Of The Dancing Towers). They originally settled in the Greenpoint area of Brooklyn. However, they were encouraged to move to the Bronx where it was considered to be country and “l’aria era piu fresca” (the air was fresher) as our grandmother would say. (At that time, The Arthur Avenue Retail Market was originally a sheep meadow.)

Our grandfather, who was a butcher, carried his trade and in 1922 opened his first shop on Arthur Avenue. Grandpa was successful and had a number of shops. The family lived in an apartment, where else but over one of the stores. Our grandparents were the original butchers in the new indoor market that Mayor LaGuardia built in 1940.

One sure reason for Grandpa Gennaro’s success was Nonnabella. Nonnabella was as amazingly strong and determined as she was gentle and kind-hearted. Widowed at age 40, she ran the store with her sons, made lunch for all the workers each day and managed to raise five children. We’ve been told that she would let the original pushcart vendors run electric heater cords into her store but had to limit them to only one at a time because of the fuses blowing.

Marco Grob’s Biography:

Born in Olten, Switzerland, Marco started his career as a photographer’s assistant in Los Angeles, USA. After his return to Switzerland, he opened his first studio and worked as a still life photographer. In 2003, he decided to change his career towards portrait and fashion photography. Since then, he has photographed celebrities such as president Obama, George Clooney, Leonardo Dicaprio, Jeff bridges, Colin firth, Sandra bullock, Buzz Aldrin, Hillary Clinton, David Lynch, Sir Elton John, Uma Thurman, Pink, just to name a few. He worked for magazines like Time, New York Magazine, Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair, Marie Claire, Elle, Cosmopolitan and Das Zeit Magazin. His advertising clients are the Walt Disney Studios, Warner Brothers, Tag Heuer, Adidas, BBC, Nike, Ard and Louis Vuitton. Marco’s work earned him numerous awards, topped with the prestigious Hasselblad master in 2007.

He lives in new york and works around the world.

About the Record

The Williams Record, founded in 1885, is the independent student newspaper of record at Williams College. The Record editorial board is responsible for making all decisions about coverage and content.

The weekly paper publishes in broadsheet form on Wednesdays from September through May, except during school breaks and exam periods. The Record covers news and events relevant to campus. Space is also provided for letters to the editor and op-eds written by members of the Williams community.

Though the Record is listed alongside other student organizations, the paper receives no funding from the administration or College Council. Publication is funded through advertising, subscriptions and online contributions. If you read the Record regularly but do not hold a subscription, please consider making a contribution to support our continued publication.

Editorships at the Record turn over in January. The incoming editor-in-chief selects all executive board members, including managing editor(s) and executive editors. Applications for section editor positions (News, Opinions, Features, Arts, Sports, Photo, Online) are due toward the end of the fall semester. Prior experience writing or shooting for the Record is strongly encouraged, but not required…
